Ritz Theater

Built in 1938, the Ritz Theater has long been a familiar landmark on Malvern’s Main Street. When the building was donated to Arkansas State University Three Rivers, the college saw an opportunity to return the historic movie house to service as a place for performance, film, learning, and community gathering.

The rehabilitation unfolded in deliberate phases. Work began with restoration of the historic façade and a re-created neon marquee, bringing a visible sign of renewal back to downtown. Subsequent phases restored the lobby and restrooms, renewed interior finishes, and prepared the adjacent former TV repair shop for a new supporting role.

With support from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council, the completed fifth phase added the Ritz Conference Center next door: expanded lobby and reception space, additional restrooms, a planned multipurpose green room, meeting rooms, and new connections between the theater and conference facilities in the future. New audiovisual and lighting systems for the theater allow the space to be used for assemblies, ensemble performances, and visual presentations via a large LED board that approximates the former film projection screen.

Together, the Ritz Theater and Conference Center demonstrate how a phased rehabilitation can turn a beloved historic building into a flexible, contemporary civic asset—one capable of welcoming audiences, students, events, and new generations of Main Street activity.
